Cover crops affect soybean yield components, but not grain quality

Cover cropping is mainly used to prevent soil erosion, but the effects of individual cover crops on subsequent soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] are hardly known. Therefore, two annual field trials with 15 crop species and bare fallow as control were conducted in semi-arid East Austria 2016 2017. sown July 3- × 10-m plots a randomized block design three replicates incorporated mid-April before seeded. biomass differed between plant year (2016, 626 ± 390; 2017, 84 86.1 g m−2). Aboveground did not affect establishment, single such ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam. var. westerwoldicum Wittm.), kidney vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria L.), corn cockle (Agrostemma githago L.) impeded seeding due high root densities prevented germination or fostered outbreak two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch). Overall, exception ryegrass, vetch, cockle, can be grown ahead without any loss for their versatile ecosystem services.
